Geoff Uglow British, b. 1978

Biography

Geoff Uglow (b. 1978) grew up on the coast of Cornwall and studied painting at the Glasgow School of Art. He is one of the greatest painting talents to emerge from Glasgow School of Art in recent years. Uglow won the prestigious Alastair Salvesen Art Scholarship for painting and travel in 2009 and used his time to journey around the coast of Scotland in the footsteps of famous eighteenth-century painter William Daniell. Through this project, Uglow connected with his visceral response to nature through painting:  “Following in his footsteps almost 200 years on, my own journey through this landscape has been one of astonishment... Scotland owns a complex and diabolical beauty that is breathtaking.”

Based in rural Cornwall, Uglow finds endless inspiration in the surrounding natural environment. Uglow illustrates the changes of the passing year with colours that capture an ephemeral atmosphere and a tangible essence of nature. He describes many of his paintings as "a handwritten letter, a moment, which can suspend disbelief, a fragment of vanished beauty." Uglow employs an impasto technique that holds incredible movement in the swirls and undulations of viscous paint. The crests and petals of Uglow’s marbled landscapes effortlessly capture the transient energy and beauty of the natural world.

Uglow has exhibited both in the UK and internationally and has won numerous awards including the John Cunningham and Cargill Awards. His work is featured in multiple key museums like the Royal Scottish Academy, Kelvingrove Museum and the Royal Glasgow Institute.
