Neuralink Corporation is a neurotechnology company developing implantable brain-machine interfaces co-founded by Elon Musk. In 2020, they presented a pig named Gertrude with a coin-sized computer chip in its brain to showcase its plans for a working brain-machine interface. The painting Gertrude is obviously inspired by this event, but elements like the phone, the remote control, and the personification of such a figure use humour to iconize a comparison we often make between humans and pigs. The poor pigs never did anything wrong, but Gertrude is happy. Is it the way we treat her, or is it just the chip that commands her brain to smile?
