Bram Winterford British, b. 1995
Bram Winterford (b.1995) is a British artist, using mediums of painting and drawing to create surreal and alluring works of art. With a background in architectural practice, his works embody a mastery of structural balance and grandiose creativity. Bram's paintings combine autobiographical storytelling with surreal and symbolic Imagery. He transposes the personal to the mythological, often using the language of parable and religious narratives, and as such he is influenced by medieval painters and early renaissance artists.
Bram explores and critiques this contemporary dichotomy of cultural anxiety and technologically enhanced solipsism with paintings full of references to personal experiences arranged in ways that play with traditional compositions; filling the canvas with friends and family, memorable places and objects of symbolic value. The resulting complexity is meant to overwhelm and intrigue, inviting the viewer to engage with the work in a careful and investigatory manner that rewards patient consideration.
"I almost want the paintings to be both detailed and diffuse. I like the idea of seeing these paintings from a distance and mistaking them for something more decorative: if I squint I almost want to see an abstract painting." Here Bram's approach is to be at once both resolved and obscure - with an intention to provoke and entice and ensnare.
