Betty C Fan Taipei , b. 1990

Biography

Betty C Fan (b. 1990, Taipei), currently based in London, reflects upon her non-definitive cultural story through her sensory experience and everyday negotiations as potential parallels for comprehending cultural fluidity on a broader scale.

Having traversed Taipei, Hong Kong, and Los Angeles during childhood, Fan developed a sensitivity towards everyday sound and spatial impact. She uses architectural elements and sound to experience a life transcending clear cultural category, to investigate familiar echoes amid foreign surroundings. In her practice, she plays with sculpture, spatial, sound, and performance and uses methods informed by her architectural background with classical music training. She begins each work by modelling environments digitally and composing piano pieces, laying the structural skeletons for sculpture and performance development.

Fan is completing an MA in Sculpture at the Royal College of Arts on a Scholarship from The Pokémon Company. Her works have been exhibited in London, Hong Kong, Michigan, and Chicago. Prior to her art practice, Fan holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Pratt Institute and a Master of Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University. She also worked in various architectural design firms, gaining experience in conceptual design and construction for commercial, residential, mixed-use, cultural, and installation projects.
