Venus, I saw, I conquered, I came - Hugo's painting is named after the famous phrase Vene, vidi, vici, popularly attributed to Julius Caesar, who, according to Appian, used the phrase in a letter to the Roman Senate around 47 BC after winning a quick victory in his brief war against Pharnaces II of Pontus at the Battle of Zela. The phrase is used to denote a quick, final victory. Although in this work he changes the order of the verbs and uses Venus as a symbol of the feminine. Lami wanted to express the power of the goddess Venus in the hierarchy of Roman mythology, representing the feminine in each of us and the strength of the individual over his own body.
