The title ‘I want Candy’ is from a pop song (by Melanie C) that is used in the movie ‘Marie Antoinette’ by Sophia Coppola. It is played during the scene when MA is having a girls-only party in the champagne room surrounded by shoes, jewellery and lots of cake and candy. I wanted to make a work that reflected that decadence and self-indulgence of these cake eating, champagne drinking young girls; a piece that screamed pop culture and consumerism through its colors and use of patterns and images. The frame that I used in the work is a printed image of a golden chain that I cut out from a fashion fabric. I used a mixture of shiny hot-pink and red pvc, pink lace, bits and pieces of cut out tapestries with images of ribbons, presents, shiny balls and gowns. I added the butterflies to enhance the girly sweetness. The comic balloons with the words OMG, Booom and Crash refer to American pop art and express the dead end of consumerism and the destructive side of excess. With ‘I want Candy’ I also wanted to say that we are allowed to indulge ourselves and to take up our space.Exhibitions
