Johan's work has always been about energy, the energy of landscapes, humans, the universe. In his new series, he is digging deeper into painting energies, and examining the very building blocks of energy; the essence of everything around us, namely cells and subatomic particles. The circles in the foreground are "cells" splitting into and forming new cells, new life being generated from a former life. It's colourful as Van Mullem believes the essence of a rainbow is also the essence of a human being - we all have a rainbow inside of us. Everything about us, our history, our universe, psychological states contain these tiny building blocks of nature - they are everywhere and everything around us and we don't see them - but we are them and they are us and everything around us as well.
