The line at the bottom of the work creates visual horizon, while simultaneously and metaphorically representing the horizon of time. The two circular structures in the foreground of the work are singular "cells" moving through time. In this body of work, Van Mullem is breaking down energy into it its most essential elements, namely cells or even what cells are made of, subatomic particles - the very building blocks of energy and nature - what he has always concerned himself within his art. Van Mullem is most interested in unseen forces that exist both in, around and of us, the very essence of us - this series of work looks deeper into the energies that drive us to action both physically and psychologically, thus the name, Cellular Ballads.
